Lexus NX Hybrid

Importing a used Lexus NX Hybrid from the USA

The Lexus NX Hybrid is one of the most sensible ways into a premium compact SUV: Toyota's proven hybrid hardware wrapped in a well-built, quiet Lexus body. The American used market carries these cars in large numbers, and buyers in Germany increasingly look across the Atlantic when the right specification simply isn't sitting on a local forecourt. As an independent broker, USCar Trader sources the exact car you want, checks its history, and organises transport and customs clearance on your behalf. We do not carry stock and we do not add a hidden margin to the vehicle.

Generations at a glance

The first-generation NX (chassis code AZ10) arrived for the 2015 model year and ran through 2021. The hybrid version wore the NX 300h badge and paired a 2.5-litre 2AR-FXE four-cylinder running on the Atkinson cycle with front and rear electric motors, giving all-wheel drive through the E-Four system without a physical driveshaft to the rear axle. The second generation (AZ20), launched for 2022, was a clean-sheet redesign. The volume hybrid became the NX 350h, and a plug-in NX 450h+ joined the range for buyers who want a meaningful electric-only commute. The 2022 car also introduced the far better Lexus Interface touchscreen, replacing the fiddly Remote Touch trackpad that defined the first generation.

Powertrain lineup

The NX 300h produces a combined 194 hp and is geared for efficiency rather than pace, with a power-split e-CVT that keeps the engine calm in traffic. The second-generation NX 350h uses the newer 2.5-litre A25A-FXS engine and lifts combined output to roughly 239 hp, with noticeably stronger mid-range response. The NX 450h+ plug-in adds a larger drive battery and around 304 hp combined. All hybrid versions sold in the US are all-wheel drive, using a dedicated rear electric motor rather than a mechanical transfer case, so there is no low-range and the AWD is aimed at traction and stability, not serious off-roading.

Trims in the US market

The NX is offered only as a five-door SUV. First-generation US hybrids came in base, Luxury and F Sport flavours, the latter adding sportier seats, unique grille mesh and adaptive dampers on some cars. The second-generation NX 350h is sold in NX 350h, Premium, Luxury and F Sport Handling grades, with the top cars carrying the larger 14-inch screen, head-up display, panoramic roof and Mark Levinson audio. When you import, the trim badge matters less than the option list, so we read the build sticker rather than trusting the marketing name.

The used market stateside

Supply is deep. Well-kept 2015 to 2021 NX 300h examples turn up constantly, often from single owners in coastal states, and the 2022-onward NX 350h is now filtering out of leases in good numbers. Typical mileage tracks age closely; American hybrids tend to accumulate steady highway kilometres rather than short cold starts, which suits the drivetrain. We favour southern and western cars for their lack of road-salt corrosion and always verify the odometer against service records rather than the dashboard alone.

Who should import one

An NX Hybrid import makes sense if you want a low-fuss, low-consumption premium SUV and you have a clear picture of the colour, trim and options you're after. Because the same platform was also sold in Europe, workshop support and parts availability are excellent, which removes much of the risk that comes with importing a US-only model. If you value refinement and long-term dependability over outright driving thrill, this is a strong candidate.

How reliable is it?

Lexus NX Hybrid reliability is a genuine strength. The hybrid system is closely related to Toyota's Camry and RAV4 hardware, with hundreds of thousands of high-mileage examples in service. That said, no car is without weak points. First-generation NX owners complain most about the Remote Touch trackpad, which is a usability rather than a durability issue. A well-documented low-pressure fuel pump defect affected many 2018–2020 Toyota and Lexus models using a Denso pump and was addressed under recall, so confirm it was completed. The 12-volt auxiliary battery is a common cause of no-start faults as cars age and is cheap to replace. Brake actuator and cooling-pump complaints exist but are not widespread. The traction battery itself typically outlasts the rest of the car; genuine failures are rare and often signalled well in advance by warning lights.

What US models do differently

US-market NX Hybrids run miles-per-hour instruments, US daytime running light and headlight aim settings, and often amber or combined rear lamp clusters without a dedicated rear fog light, which German registration requires. Telematics and connected services set up for North America may not function here. Because the NX was also sold new in Europe, none of this is hard to resolve, and parts and diagnostics are readily available at any Lexus dealer.

Seven steps to your import

The process runs in a fixed order: you choose the exact car, we verify the VIN and plant code to establish origin, funds are held in escrow until the vehicle is confirmed, the car is booked onto an ocean vessel, it clears German customs on arrival, then goes through TÜV inspection and individual approval (Einzelabnahme) before local registration. We coordinate each stage and keep you informed at the handover points.

Customs, taxes and costs explained

In short: the 0% duty rate applies only with documented US origin (VIN/plant) – German import VAT of 19% is always due.

Because this model is generally built in Japan, the standard EU third-country import duty for passenger cars normally applies. The 0% rate reserved for provably US-built vehicles under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 only applies where the VIN and plant code confirm US assembly and the car is shipped directly — which is not typical for the NX. Separately, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) always applies, without exception, and is calculated on the customs value plus duty and freight. We never promise a duty-free import.

German TÜV and registration

Typical changes for approval include fitting a rear fog lamp, adjusting or replacing headlights to European aim, and confirming the odometer reads correctly. Documentation of the hybrid system and a valid CoC or individual data acquisition supports the TÜV process. Once the inspection is passed, registration follows the normal German path.

The buyer checklist

  • Decode the VIN and confirm the assembly plant for origin.
  • Pull a full Carfax or AutoCheck history for accidents and title branding.
  • Confirm the fuel-pump recall and any hybrid-related campaigns were completed.
  • Inspect underbody and suspension for road-salt corrosion.
  • Check the 12V battery age and service history.
  • Verify the traction battery health readout if available.
  • Match the odometer to service and inspection records.

Questions and answers

Is the Lexus NX Hybrid a reliable used import?

Yes. The drivetrain is closely related to Toyota's high-volume hybrids and is among the most dependable in its class, provided recalls are done and servicing is documented.

How long does the hybrid battery last?

The high-voltage battery usually outlasts the rest of the car, commonly well beyond 250,000 km, and failures typically give warning before leaving you stranded.

Does the NX Hybrid qualify for 0% import duty?

Only if the VIN proves US assembly, which is uncommon for a model normally built in Japan. Otherwise the standard passenger-car rate applies.

Do I always pay German import VAT?

Yes. The 19% Einfuhrumsatzsteuer applies to every import regardless of origin and is calculated separately from any duty.

What needs changing for TÜV?

Usually a rear fog lamp and European headlight settings, plus verification of the instruments and safety systems during individual approval.

Which generation should I import?

The 2022-onward NX 350h has more power and a far better infotainment system; earlier 300h cars are cheaper to buy and equally durable.

Is servicing a problem in Germany?

No. The NX was sold new here, so parts and Lexus dealer support are readily available.
